This has been a good weekend. I didn't do anything spectacular, just yardwork basically. I never thought I would actually enjoy yardwork, but this homeownership thing has done odd things to me. I actually take pride in my rose bushes for christ's sake! I even worry about the BMX punks next door crashing into them. Can you picture me shaking my fist and shouting "stay out of my damn rose bushes you punks"? Strange stuff.
I have also taken up running again. I am up to 6 miles a day, and am starting to get into decent shape. It is pretty easy to keep up the routine in Eugene since 90% of the people that live here are runners. I don't know if you guys remember my philosophy regarding other runners, but it can basically be summed up with the phrase "There can be only one". The only way for me to eliminate them is to pass them when I am running, thereby humiliating them and making them jump to their icy deaths off the Ferry St. bridge into the Willamette river. No, I'm not a competetive person at all...
You've still got that Prefontaine obsession, don't you?
Or was that an Anderson thing that you picked up? Regardless, you need to follow my example and let grad school turn you into a lazy head. Not that I wasn't a lazy head before. But I've even refused to *bike* the 2 miles to the lab on beautiful days. It's because of the hill. Yeah, that's right. The hill.
Speaking of bikes, I got new shifters, rear cogs, and a rear derailleur (all XT) the other day. It all started with a trip to get new brake pads, and it went downhill from there. But you should have SEEN the old cogs. Perhaps I'll post a picture of the remaining front cogs before I replace them so that you can see the extent of the wear. At least now that I've got the new parts, shifting is something that actually happes, rather than something I wish would happen.

They're some nice cogs, too.
Jesus, back to 6 miles already? I tried in vain to start jogging again too, but it was a disaster. But you inspired me the first time (those glorious 30 days six years ago), so maybe I'll try again.
Posted by: jason at April 13, 2003 08:34 PMGo for it Jason. I too remember those 30 glorious days. Those days can be here again.
And 4-cob, it was indeed Andross who had the Prefontaine obsession, but I can't really avoid being fascinated with him a little bit. The running trail that I use is called "Pre's Trail" and was apparently Prefontaine's idea. It runs through Eugene and Springfield along the Willematte River, and has lots of signs out from which Prefontaine's creepy moustached face blankly stares out at runners.
